Will condoms protect me from getting a STD?
When used consistently and correctly, condoms can reduce the risk of contracting a STD. But it is important to remember you can be infected with a STD even when using condoms 100% of the time. The only guaranteed way to avoid infection of a STD is to practice sexual abstinence while single.

Can STDs be cured?
Some STDs can be treated with antibiotics. However, many of these infections go untreated because they often have no symptoms.
Viral infections are not curable and have potentially severe long-term health issues. For example, HSV-2 can lead to a painful chronic infection for the person infected. In pregnancy this virus can lead to miscarriage, preterm birth and fatal infections for the newborn.
HIV damages the immune system of the person infected leaving them susceptible to a number of diseases. This means the HIV infected person may have AIDS. In the United States, 18,000 people die from AIDS every year.
